The trend seems to be toward more comfort for the fan.


With the increased competition from television viewing, the trend seems to be making the in person attendance experience more comfortable for the fans to encourage them to come. One of the ideas being implemented multiple places is chair back seating to replace bleachers. I know places like Nebraska and Ohio State like to cram more and more seats on bleachers to drive up numbers, but most can't do that.

So a trend seems to be replacing bleachers with chair back seats. Pitt and Miami have this because they are in NFL stadiums. Louisville has this, and now Duke and UNC will have this. Duke for part of Wallace Wade Stadium. They still have bleachers in the end zones. Making these changes reduces capacity rather than adds capacity.

The other trend is more luxury suites and better tailgating. It's too tempting to stay home and avoid traffic and hassle when the game is televised. So effort must be made to make the live attendance more appealing.
